How to pay for University of Georgia

University of Georgia costs about $30,589 a year in-state and $52,703 out-of-state for students entering in 2027 — a $22,114 difference that changes the whole plan. Most families on aid pay well under either figure. The useful question is not what it costs — it is which money you spend first, and in what order.

Among students who receive aid, aid averages about $15,361 a year — roughly $61,444 across four years. Net price and average aid here reflect the in-state basis; an out-of-state student typically receives less need-based aid at a public university, so confirm your own figures before planning against these.

Cost and net-price figures: U.S. Department of Education, College Scorecard (2024-25 data), projected forward to 2027 at 3.0%/year. Scorecard publishes on a roughly two-year lag, so the unprojected figure would understate what you will actually be billed. The out-of-state figure swaps in the published out-of-state tuition. Average net price covers students receiving federal aid; an individual family's figure will differ.

So how do you pay the rest?

Whether you enroll in-state or out-of-state, the family contribution after aid is real money — and out-of-state, the gap is far larger.

Which account you draw from changes what the four years cost. Spending a 529 down early lowers the assets FAFSA assesses at 5.64% a year, which can raise the grant you are offered next year at a school that awards need-based aid. Paying $4,000 of tuition from cash rather than the 529 can capture a $2,500 tax credit the 529 would have disqualified. Borrowing in the parent's name instead of the student's changes the interest and who carries it.

None of that is visible on an award letter — it is the difference between two families with identical aid packages paying materially different totals. The plan works out which of these levers apply to your school and your numbers.
