DC's programs. Most come through the FAFSA or the state's own aid application; a few have their own.

DC Tuition Assistance Grant

For District residents of 12 months or more going for a first bachelor's degree. It covers the gap between in-state and out-of-state tuition at public colleges, up to $15,000 a year from 2026-27. At private HBCUs and private nonprofit colleges in the DC region it pays up to $3,750 a year. Apply every year; income limits apply.

  • The Legacy Grant: $1,000 a year for up to four years, for a first-year student whose parent, grandparent or sibling graduated from the university
